Microsoft Has Sold 300 Million Windows 7 Licences

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

We already know that Windows 7 has seen a much more positive reception than its predecessor, Windows Vista. Last summer Microsoft announced that it had shipped an impressive 175 million Windows 7 licenses. So how are sales now that the OS has been available for more than a year?

As part of its quarterly earnings call yesterday, Microsoft revealed that the company has now sold 300 million Windows 7 licenses.

“To put that in perspective, 300 million is roughly the combined number of households in North American and in Europe!” writes Brandon LeBlanc on the Windows blo. “Or, to put it another way, if you lined up 300 million Windows 7 product boxes, they would stretch nearly 1.5 times around the Earth,” he said.

LeBlanc also reported that over 20 percent of Internet-connected PCs in the world are running Microsoft’s latest iteration of Windows. This is up from the 16 percent he reported in July of last year. However, all is not rosy on the Windows front. Bloomberg reports that Microsoft’s Windows revenue of $5.05 billion missed the $5.2 billion figure that represents an average of of analysts’ estimates.

Hmm... funny how they don't state how many of those 300 million are taking advantage of downgrade rights and switched to XP? Every new PC bought by anyone or any Enterprise/SMB has to have a license with it and it is always a license for the current OS. That doesn't mean they actually use the current OS. I personally love Windows 7 and use it at home, but getting the Corporate world to use it is still a nightmare.

I happen to work at a BIG it company, and we already have more Win 7 machines than XP or Vista together. Most client companies are also switching to 7 fast.
It might differ from corporation to corporation, though.

Good for Windows. 7 was a decent OS, especially compared to Vista. However, it's still no XP. I don't know if Microsoft is stupid or merely aiming its products at the lowest common denominator, but each and every Windows release has brought more fancy UI's, more useless features and less simple, efficient computing. XP marked Windows' high tide: it looked good, was easy to use and had tons of features. Best of all, it offered that while remaining light on resources.

Vista and 7 on the other hand, are slow, inefficient and not really aimed at productivity.

The same thing can be said of the office suite: office 2003 was/is brilliant. Like XP, it's UI is simple yet effective and it doesn't try to tell you what you want like 2007/2010 do.

Dumb housewives and teenage girls might want good looking and easy to use stuff, but can't you at least make a decent OS for people that have other priorities too? Here's a hint: take XP, give it DirectX11, add some modern security features and improve font rendering. Voila, you have the best OS ever made.

7 is faster, easier to use and has more and better features than XP. Some people just need to catch up.

Ubuntu runs fast on new AND old PCs, and has just as many features - plus it's FREE. Let's face it, most ppl just need a browser for their everyday computing, the underlying OS doesn't really matter anymore. Many ppl don't even know iPhones are running an Apple OS - seriously. I overheard someone the other day saying iPhone was a Microsoft product! Just goes to show....

If anyone decides to stick XP on a new current PC over 7 then they are either mad or need a specific old cranky app or hardware to run for their business. Most folks haven't a clue what a virtual machine for XP is so don't go there.

So most would be mad.

The only thing I miss in XP over 7 is the more straightforward networking setup where you can easily get to the mechanics of the thing rather than 7's "there is no network, so that's it" stance. Might work for the average joe but some of us like to get our hands dirty.

windows 7 is better than XP, but i do not think vista was a disappointment, i think vista and 7 are more power hungry to encourage people to upgrade hardware and to advance in hardware technologies other wise people would sill be using pentium 3's instead of quad cores.

300 million licenses where sold but how many illegal copies of windows 7 are in use, must be like twice the sold amount.
