BBC to Air Wimbledon Finals in 3D
The BBC has announced that it will be broadcasting the Wimbledon finals in 3D.
While Virgin and Sky have both embraced the 3D format and shown a number of sporting events in 3D, the BBC hasn’t exactly been a prominent name on the 3DTV scene. However, all that changed when the national broadcaster this week announced that it would be screening it's first 3D broadcast next month, and it's none other than the Wimbledon finals.
Way back in March, Sony and the BBC announced a partnership that would see the Beeb and Sony collaborate to film the Wimbledon finals in 3D. The plan was that the footage be shown in cinemas around the world, however, there was talk of national broadcasters showing the 3D games, too. Yesterday, the BBC confirmed that it would air the men's and women's finals in 3D on July 2 and 3.
"We're bringing audiences a new way of getting close to the action," said Danielle Nagler, head of BBC HD and 3D. "I'm sure that 3D will only add to the drama as the world's greatest players compete for the championship."
Wimbledon is typically a very traditional affair but the decision to film in 3D was a calculated effort to stay current. Ian Ritchie, Chief Executive of the All England Club, said in March that the 3D matches would allow fans who can't make it to the games feel a little closer to the action but highlighted the importance of keeping up with the times:
"Not everyone can be here during the championships so it's another opportunity for fans to feel a bit closer to the action," said Ritchie. "We see ourselves as the best tennis event in the world but we want to be seen as one of the best sporting events. If you stand still you fall behind."
Those with access to BBC HD (and a 3DTV and a HD box) will be able to watch the game for free.

Ironically this will still only be available on Sky and Virgin as Freeview & Freesat do not offer 3D services!
