Warcraft Movie Adapted By Private Ryan Writer
Sam Raimi said that "Saving Private Ryan" writer will pen the Warcraft movie.
Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi dropped a few Warcraft nuggets in a recent phone interview with MTV Multiplayer, revealing that the upcoming movie will not be based on the Arthas: Rise of the Lich King novel witten by Christie Golden. Raimi said that the story will be an "original effort" based on the Warcraft universe.
"We would choose... something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it," he said. "But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters."
Raimi also revealed that Robert Rodat has signed on to write the story. His previous screenplays include The Patriot and Saving Private Ryan, two extremely successful movies. While the credentials don't seem ideal for a fantasy-based, game-based movie, Raimi seemed rather confident that Rodat will "properly capture" the Horde and the Alliance and the overall mythology.
"We want to be really faithful to the game," Raimi said. "We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a 'World of WarCraft' adventure. Only obviously it's very different 'cause it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture."

I have never seen a good game based movie but I have to be honest and say I will go and see the movie. Can't wait.
Blizzard you can have my 12 bucks any time
If they can't make a good movie from the Warcraft Universe it is all on Hollywood for being rubbish. There is just so much material in Warcraft, more than any other media a movie could be based on.
If this doesn't work then all hope is lost for future games based movies
@ rudski
Resident Evil? The first film was brilliant.
I think the WoW film will flop. Who is going to see it outside the WoW community. I know I have no interest in it.
The big problem with the Dungeons & Dragons movie was that they tried to remain close to the source material and directly transplant what they saw and played onto the screen. It didn't work because there's nothing really you can directly lift - the players create it themselves. If the movie stayed true to the spirit and used D&D as the textbook and information resource it's supposed to be then things would've been so much better.
WoW will be exactly the same. Yes there are key characters, races, allegiances and events established in its mythology, but you can't really just lift those out and make a film because all WoW players will know exactly what's going to happen and cry loudly if things are changed (possibly teh same reason why Valve keep turning down Half Life scripts).
If Raimi is correct and holds to the "we'll be true to the environment but we're making our own story based on the material presented to us" then I think the movie has a better chance of succeeding.
The real challenge though will be making a movie that will be sufficiently different from Lord of the Rings.
AvP was a comic book long before either of the games
Hahahaha, MKeeper that was good.

Ill still watch any computer industry generated movie or series. Just because its about something from the computer world, my world, our world?
Blizzards World??
