ViewSonic Making Smartphone That Runs Win XP

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Forget Windows Mobile, this is XP.

Smartphones have changed the way that we browse the web (and perhaps what you read in the bathroom). So far we've always had a different experience using our phones than our PCs due to both hardware and software differences.

Soon, there will be a solution for those of you who want the mobility of a smartphone coupled with a full desktop OS will want to keep an eye on the ViewSonic PC Phone VCP08.

A translated report from a Chinese source indicates that the ViewSonic phone will have an Intel low-voltage, 512MB RAM, 8 GB storage space with microSD support, a 4.3-inch TFT touch panel, a QWERTY full keyboard and even mouse buttons.

Unsubsidized pricing is estimated at $800.

This isn't the first smartphone to boast Windows XP software. Back in September, we learned of the xpPhone, which shares many of the same characteristics as the ViewSonic PC Phone VCP08.

Wow. I have to say, there are times when I just wish I had my PC in my pocket, and with this you would get just that. And who needs an app store when there is so much software available too? Shame I won't ever be able to afford one...

What a stupid idea. Why do companies think anyone (except ukcal) want an unusably small, unusably slow XP experience?

Sorry dude, I think it's a stoopid idea.

Ha, no worries, i just find the concept of having a device as similar to my main pc in my pocket quite appealing!

if they can cram the sort of power that the first eeepc's had in them into something the size of a phone, then this could be brilliant!

not only could you have full web browsing and office support, but how about playing old 3d games (morrowind!), emulators, and even streammygame.com.

if this is done well, it could truly be the next generation of mobile phones come early.
