ISPs may be legally obliged to cut off habitual downloaders

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Habitual downloaders may face the scary prospect of having no internet connection at all if the Government’s plans to tackle online piracy go ahead.

A proposal expected to be unveiled next week would mean that service providers (Virgin, BT and the like) could be required by law to disconnect customers who are illegally downloading material.

ISPs will operate on a three strikes and you’re out basis. According to the Times, users who are suspected of wrongly downloading files will be first warned via a stern email. Somewhere along the lines of “we’ve got our eye on you”, we figure.

If, after receiving the email, the user continues to download files, their service provider will suspend their connection for a period of time.

If caught a third time, new laws would mean your internet connection would be no more. That’s right folks, there ain’t no scarier word than termination.

Of course you could always just say it was your neighbour piggybacking. But that would be wrong.
