UK Police Taking e-Statements with ToughBooks
Police in Avon & Somerset are stepping toward the future with a trial that will see electronic witness statements taken on Panasonic ToughBooks.
The days of handwritten witness statements could be numbered if a three-month trial of estatements in the Avon & Somerset Constabulary proves to be successful. MSN UK reports that the police force will be using Panasonic ToughBooks to take the estatements as well as digital signatures using the ToughBook’s stylus. The idea is that typed statements will be easier to read and distributed and completely accessible from other machines.
Supported by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the computers use Form Patrol software from HeliMedia.
"The EWS pilot is intended to demonstrate radical improvements to the criminal justice process from the initial arrest phase, through custody and onto the eventual court appearance," Inspector Kevin McCarthy, from the NPIA Digital Evidence Programme, is quoted as saying.
"In particular, we expect to demonstrate the savings in the time and cost of managing the criminal justice back office process."
