Turning your iPod Touch into a 3G iPhone for free
San Francisco (CA) – So, your iPhone doesn’t do 3G out of the box ? A few weeks ago we told you how to get 3G through JoikuSpot and we recently discovered that this feature works on an iPod Touch as well.
JoikuSpot basically allows you to turn a Nokia smartphone into a Wi-Fi access point, which would hand you Wi-Fi (3G) connectivity for your notebook, even if there’s no regular access point available. And if you are the proud owner of one of Apple’s most expensive iPods sold these days, you can use the software to turn your music player into a broadband cellphone.
Simply enable the iPod Touch Wi-Fi connection, connect it to your Nokia smartphone with JoikuSpot (all Nokia devices from E51 and up have Wi-Fi and are compatible with JoikuSpot) and voila, you have a 3G iPhone. The list of phones and the configuration is available here.
While some of you may say that this is an unfair setup since a Nokia smartphone is required, bear in mind that Nokia ships 400 million cellphones a year.
At least for now, there is no catch 22 with JoikuSpot. This software is produced free of charge and available free of charge. Just make sure you have a decent data plan that lets you use the 3G feature without having to mortgage your house.
