Tolkien Trust sues New Line Cinema over LOTR profits
Oh dear, oh dear. Rumour has it that the estate of Lord of the Ring’s author, JRR Tolkein is sueing New Line Cinema because the company has yet to share any of the loot from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Everyone who’s anyone (or anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the last seven or eight years) knows about the LOTR trilogy. Even if they haven’t read the books they’ve probably seen the movie and unless you pirated it (tut tut), you helped contribute to the $6 billion dollars the movies raked in worldwide.
So naturally, it’s only fair that the Tolkein estate gets a decent cut right ?
Charity Tolkien’s Trust have filed the suit against New Line and backing them as co-plaintiffs are Tolkien’s estate and his publisher, HarperCollins.
They want £77m ($150m) in compensation, along with punitive damages. Aside from that they also want to have New Line stripped of the rights to make any more movies based any Tolkien’s works, which could throw a bit of a spanner in the works when it comes to the production of The Hobbit..
As usual the charity claimed that they tried to do things the easy way, out of court, but New Line weren’t being cooperative, so no more Mr Nice Charity.
