Asus Preparing Windows and Google Tablets

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Asus is said to be preparing two slate PCs that it will reveal in the next few of months.

Speaking to Forbes on a recent trip to the U.S., Asus chairman, Jonney Shih, said his company is working on at least two tablets that it plans to unveil in the coming months. Similar to the HP's plans for two versions of its Slate, Asus is planning a Windows version of the device, as well as one with Android or Chrome.

Asus is credited for bringing about the netbook revolution with the launch of the Eee PC in October of 2007 but the focus on tablets doesn't mean the company will be abandoning netbooks. Shih says the tablets will be very media-centric, particularly the Google one, and insists there's room for tablets among the crowds of netbooks, smartphones and ereaders.

"Netbooks are the best combination of personal computing and cloud computing," Shih told Forbes. "But between netbooks and smartphones and e-readers, we think there will be a space for something like a tablet or slate PC."

Ok.

So far, with Windows 7 set at 125% or even better, 150% DPI works VERY well as a touch tablet (As in fingers, not pen). I currently own an Asus R2h and a Dell Latitude XT (With SSD as the standard 1.8" drive is VERY poor).

Multi-touch is fun and essential for typing on the excellent standard WIndows 7 keyboard!

Wish list:
At least a Dual core 1.6Ghz cpu
8Gb support
Multi-touch screen like the XT
At least 5 hours battery life
At least a 64Gb SSD drive
At least a resolution of 1366x768

I'd buy one. Not interested in an Atom cpu as I want the near power of a desktop/standard laptop and the form factor of a tablet. One of the best tablets I've owned so far has been the HP tc1100 and only the single core let it down :(

Give me that and I'll buy one. Give me endless Atom tablets and tablets that basically follow the iPad and I'll fold. Here's hoping that the HP slate gets various versions.

P.s. If this was an iPad article we'd be on post 400 by now. Apple seems to be the 'bling' and 'shiny' that everyone talks about.
