SCUMM VM

In entirely the opposite vein to Dictionary 2.0, there are some applications to which the medium of a mobile phone seems completely unsuited, but for some reason, simply work. SCUMM VM is perhaps the best example of a Symbian application that probably shouldn’t exist... but it does, and it’s a thing of beauty.

SCUMM VM (or the Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion Virtual Machine if you don’t have an extensive background knowledge haven’t wasted your youth) is an emulator for running old point-and-click adventure games. The most famous of these include The Secret of Monkey Island and Beneath a Steel Sky.

It should be noted for anyone frothing over the prospect of playing some real games on a phone (let’s face it, mobile games don’t really count) that the SCUMM VM for Symbian OS will only run on certain phones; specifically Symbian Series 60, but it’s well worth ferreting out. The best way to check if it will work is to just download and install the application.

You can download the SCUMM VM for Symbian S60 devices, on the SCUMM VM homepage, or here.

The only real issue you might have with SCUMM VM is that it can be a little hard to source some of the old SCUMM games, but once you’ve managed that you’ll be fine.

I looks like you completely forgot Mobipocket Reader (www.mobipocket.com). It supports all Symbian phones, is pretty nice and it is the only reader that will give you access to all the real ebooks: Da Cinci Code, Michael Connelly, Stephen King, Michael Crichton ...

(to be fair, I must mention that I am CEO of Mobipocket.com, but check your research, Mobipocket is the #1 mobile reader out there)

Another handy app just released is TextQuick from http://www.mind-flip.com/. It speeds up text messaging by listing your contacts by popularity, really suprising that this isn't in the default S60 UI.
