College-bound Kids Don't Plan on Buying Macs

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Apple is losing out on the back-to-school crowd this year.

An awful lot of people have a problem with Apple's pricing. Whether you think Apple fans are "drinking the Apple Kool Aid" or paying an "Apple Tax" we can all agree on one thing: Apple computers are pretty expensive. So then, is it any wonder that kids starting college this September don’t plan on purchasing an Apple-branded laptop?

A study by consumer electronics site Retrevo says that the majority of college-bound students are not considering a Mac this year. So what are these students looking for in a laptop?

Well, the 300+ surveyed told Retrevo that they wanted longer battery life, smaller size, and a lighter laptop. The company reports that that 34 percent of laptop buyers will purchase netbooks, and 49 per cent will buy full-sized Windows-based machines. 58 percent of the students planned on spending less than $750 and only 18 percent had a budget over $1,000.

Apple is this year offering a free iPod Touch with the purchase of an Apple notebook or desktop as part of a back-to-school offer and for the first time, allowing parents of students currently attending or accepted into a public or private Higher Education Institution to take advantage of the deal when buying a laptop on behalf of their son or daughter.

You seem to have missed their Software completely... While apple do overcharge for their hardware by a decent whack, They also undercharge for their software which really does appear to be far superior to Windows which is massively overpriced

Hackingtosh could provide you with a better hardware based laptop and have the mac OS.

A group of students at my university have macbook PROs when we do any CAD modelling/ Rendering their machines overheat like crazy and shut down. The Apple laptop cases, in the hunt for form have left out function. Stuffing them with upgrades makes people asume they are better, missing out the need for cooling.

I'm far more concerned with what students are being shovelled rather than what they're using to type reports on.

Wooow... Americans did get the point of Apples being overpriced! Shocking!!! I will repeat myself for nth time...
apple - overpriced crap with nice design and lack of functionality - agree with above comments
os x - a bit retarded unix
apple software - same as other software... I cannot agree with Lucky015 - saying it's far superior - Os X is cheaper from windows - true (hopefuly not for long), but major software companies - charge pretty much same on both platforms. Adobe, Autodesk, even Microsoft... Don't know the real prices... but they are not that far away from each other. (They are actually higher on a Mac - for example:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-CS4- [...] 921&sr=8-5
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-CS4- [...] 921&sr=8-7
)
So... first you pay when you buy a PC in a nicely designed case that you cannot upgrade too much. Then you pay for the upgrades so it would not be so crap right out of the box, then you pay for the software (unless you buy it for surfing the web), and then you use it the way someone else wants you to. Now... within 6 to 9 months your computer will depreciate just like a normal PC and the only difference is that you will be able to sell it for 60% of its price (roughly) or keep using it - as "Macs last forever"... They do indeed... except it's all ruled by Apple - so I am not saying it happens again - but guess how people felt when they bought a G5 PowerMac for $$$$ right before 6th of June 2005...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X
And this is normal Apple's policy - deny all rumours, and sell as much shit as possible...
Bottom line - I don't like apple - everyone should.

Im picking up a £280 Samsung NC10 and sticking OS X on it. I will be able to get pretty much 100% hardware functionality and save myself £500 compared to the cheapest genuine apple product. Little performance difference either.

I'm sorry to say it cbarker118 but there will be a massive performance difference. That said the NC10 is a great netbook and I'm sure you'll get on fine with it.

As for Apple being undercosted for their software. You get FAR FAR FAR less free software with a Mac than a PC and all the integrated software (except IE) in Windows has worked fine for me. I'm not a massive fan of IE but from what I can tell it's on a par with Safari.

@ukctstrider, Examples? Of both comments really. FAR FAR FAR less free software with a MAC, such as?
IE on par with Safari, that one I find extremly hard to believe even a little bit. Do you have any sort of stats that back that up, as most reports confirm superior compatibility with things such as the ACID tests for Safari.

I am not a fan in any way of either OS or browser, just very curious as to your statements basis.

Cheers
