Digital Storm Rig Clocks 4.6 GHz at 0ºC
Digital Storm's new liquid-cooling system allowed Intel's i7-980X to clock up to 4.6 GHz.
Tuesday Digital Storm revealed the Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System, a PC cooling solution that can supposedly unlock overclocks of Intel's i7-980X CPU up to 4.6 GHz while keeping the processor temp surprisingly chilled below 0ºC.
As the name states, the liquid cooling system pumps freezing liquid to the CPU, "smothering" any signs of heat. According to the company, the core cooling component is a series of TEC peltier coolers that work in conjunction with other high-end liquid cooling components.
"Previously, enthusiasts were relegated to bulky phase change systems to achieve radically low temperatures to maximize performance," Digital Storm said. "Now enthusiasts can achieve unmatched overclocking potential with increased reliability since the core of Digital Storm's Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System has no moving parts."
Digital Storm's first gaming rig to feature the new Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System is the Black|Ops Hailstorm. The base Level 1 configuration doesn't come cheap--a starting price of $3,928-- and features an Intel core i7 950 CPU, 6 GB of DDR3 1600 MHz memory and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 GPU. The “Level 3” model starts at $6,304 and features an Intel Core i7 980X CPU, 6 GB or DDR3 1600 MHz memory and Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 graphics.
