Steve Jobs says Adobe is Lazy and Google is Evil

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Getting nervous, Steve?

Steve Jobs held a Town Hall meeting last week, and gave employees in attendance the chance to ask the big man on campus any questions they may have. Of course, the iPad was discussed and Jobs touched on the device's lack of Flash support. Jobs branded Adobe 'lazy,' claiming the company had a lot of potential to do interesting things but, "they just refuse to do it."

Jobs was quoted as saying the reason Apple does not support Flash is "because it is so buggy." "Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it's because of Flash. No one will be using Flash," Steve says, adding that, "The world is moving to HTML5."

As for Google's recent foray into the phone market and the fact that the company is now competing with Apple? Steve isn't scared. "We did not enter the search business," Jobs said. "They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them," he says. According to a Wired source in attendance, someone else then asked a question, changing the subject completely but "there was no getting Jobs off this rant." He went on to say, "I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing. This don’t be evil mantra: It’s bullshit."

Another source has since disputed reports that Jobs called the Google mantra 'bullshit,' claiming Steve actually called it, "a load of crap."

Either way, it's pretty clear that Steve Jobs has no intention of letting Google take down the iPhone. Do you think Steve Jobs has something to be worried about? Let us know in the comments below.

Google is evil. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Google FTW!

As for Flash? Apple should let me decide whether or not I want to use it. Give a simple setting in the control panel and let me see what happens.

And for the iPhone? It will continue to dominate if Verizon and other carriers are given access to the phone.

I think it would take a lot more than google to take down the iphone power house!

News like this isn't great for Jobs' image, or apple's for that matter!

I've had an iphone for the past year and a bit, whilst i like the iphone i really don't like the way apple think they are gods, and try and control everything you can and cant do on it. My contract is up for renewal at about the same time the next iphone is released, and if it's got no major improvements (as the last two weren't) then i'll be moving over to "evil" android for sure!

Unfortunately as a Linux user I have to admit that Flash sucks big time... I have read posts from people trying to cooperate with Adobe on PDF support, Flash support on Linux and so on - they just DON'T care and their developers are shit. I hate apple but he does have a point here...

Rab1d-BDGR: As for Linux: they don't crash the OS... it's just the plugin that shows the Flash content eats up the core it's running on... so if you have more than 1 core - you won't even see until it consumes all the available cores... Then again - when that happens you usually notice that the browser becomes unresponsive and this script

for name in $(ps ux | awk '/npviewer.bin/ && !/awk/ {print $2}'); do kill "$name"; done

does the job. Talking Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, Kubuntu 8.04 64bit. I don't use 32bit OSes anymore... which I have a feeling flash would work much better as it's based on 32bit sourcebase...

Flash runs better on Windows, and that upsets Mac users, it must therefore be 'bad'. These fan-boys are all over the internet claiming 'Flash should die!' despite NOTHING coming close to replicating the rich content and amazing media experience it provides.

Steve Jobs rather than working with Adobe to improve the Mac experience decides they are 'lazy', refuses to work with the company that helped the Mac survive. He removes support for a web standard, used everywhere online, because he needs an enemy to pick on (f'ing bully), thus further restricting his own customers and forcing them further and further into his walled garden of profiteering...

I have accessed Flash on MANY different Macs new and old, and it has never had problems... lucky I guess.

The only good that has come out of this is all the Mac fan-boy users crying how Flash crashes their machines, the same people that spread s**t about windows crashing all the time and that their Macs NEVER crash.

They are also HAPPY that they can't access Flash at all and are thanking his Jobsworth that he won't let them!

If I used Macs exclusively I would be embarrassed by both the attitude of Apple and the Apple faithful, what a bunch of morons...

Well - I agree that what Apple does to its customers is rather wrong... yet please note that we - geeks are not their targeted customers... From a geek's point of view - Apple is a horribly locked out and expensive, underpowered eco-system that looks nice - full stop. As from the web-standards point of view - every developer (or shall I say programmer - not a designer) will tell you that they hate Flash. Reason being is the way it works - it's a plugin - it's proprietary, it costs money to develop on it, differences between AS2 and AS3 are massive, it is not 100% SEO friendly, it requires a piece of software to run - Flash Player, this plugin is not supported across all the platforms, (only Silverlight is worse in that area), it crashes, it's not easy to debug, and I bet someone will come up with more stuff explaining "why Flash is bad". I agree on the "fantastic experience" - well - I will even say if not for flash we wouldn't know what's "online video"... So - yes - it's been a "good" thing back in a day... but against today's "compliant" web - Flash is just another nightmare from the past that should die out eventually - pretty much like Internet Explorer's "tweaks", "hacks" and so on... Corporations like MS and Adobe instead of promoting their own plugins should get together and help W3C to achieve its goal - the interweb that is unified across the board... Then again - if you really think about it - I am not surprised... IDE for Silverlight - costs money... same for Flash... by "promoting" something that is "bad" in principle - they have created a product that allows them to "testdrive" the technology and still make some money... Is this something new? Is this something that Apple does not do? We are all guilty here I think...

Oh and he is also very rich now. So please before calling someone a twat or whatever , u should probably read more about the person first.

How does that make him any less of a twat?

Flash may well die out eventually, but not BEFORE something comes along that can replicate what it does (and I am talking about more than just video here take a look at any of the sites on http://www.thefwa.com for example). The mere fact that there are costs involved in developing for it has meant that it itself has developed and not languished in meetings and committees.

Its long term future is irrelevant anyway (I suspect it will become open-source before it 'dies'), the fact is that nearly ALL the media rich parts of the internet use it today...

Denying your customers access to that content and ferrying them to a completely closed, pay for app store/itunes store for the content, so that you can grab some more money off them, and then blaming it on Adobe for being lazy is disingenuous, greedy and 'evil' in my opinion...

Calling it the ultimate browsing experience is a PURE LIE...

Haha - jobs putting the iTouch through a photocopier set on enlarge and it's Adobe that's lazy? Apples insane 'our way or no way' to hardware and software and Google are evil?

Whilst I actually agree that Adobe are lazy and that Google has somewhat lost it's way recently - Jobs is in entirely the wrong place to point fingers at either of them as he is worse than both combined!

There is a lot of misinformed rubbish on these comments. SJ is using the "Flash is rubbish" argument to hide a long running battle that Apple has been having with Adobe over Flash for some time.

Apple don't like Flash because it is a proprietary, closed format that makes no guarentees about future licencing terms. Flash has its place; it has a lot of nice features for animations etc.

But its place is not providing embedded video over the internet for sites like YouTube. As far as video goes, there is nothing there that Flash does can't be done with open codecs like H.264 and AAC (which Flash uses anyway) and HTML5 which will provide the tools to build embedded video players. And then we can be released from the proprietary format with its single implementation that relies on Adobe bothering to develop it properly.

Keeping millions of free flash apps out so you make money from build those same apps and charging for them isn't evil?

Two things - calling adobe lazy, this is from the company that had (past tense) a reputation for outstanding innovation and design, who hyped their latest product through the stratosphere, who describe it as magical, brillliant etc etc, and wait..... its just a big iphone.....

At least when nintendo pull shit like that with the DS, DSlite, DSi, DSXL they dont pretend they've changed the very nature of how we live every time...

And as for evil, this is the company that rents you hardware for retail prices, what more can i say - If you're going to tell me what I can and cant do with the hardware on my desk, at least have the decency to rent it to me instead of charging 1.5x the price of identical hardware.

The biggest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist, with apple it's convincing you that you're getting a great deal by paying more for the same hardware with less control.(the apple logo is an apple with a bite out if it for a reason, read genesis)

Sheldon Cooper of the Big Bang Theory: I asked myself what is the most mind-numbing, pedestrian job conceivable and three answers came to mind: a toll booth employees, an Apple store genius, and what penny does. Because I don't like touch other peoples' coins and I refuse to contribute to the devaluation of the word genius, here I am. - Win.

Haha, a bunch of Apple haters?

You do realize that Steve Jobs, the very man you are squandering right now, is responsible for popularizing the PC, the MP3 player, the laptop, and the ultraportable. Remember when Apple refused to continue use of the floppy? You guys thought that was a dumb move?

You can glorify him, or you can vilify him. But you can't ignore him. Because he and Apple, they push the human race forward.

But calling google evil? Google is the awesomest company in the world! Adobe lazy? Meh.

You know what? You're completely 100% correct.
Take the ipad for example, it's not actually an oversized iphone without the ability to call people/text, no, it's actually THE EVOLUTION OF ALL TECHNOLOGY CREATED TO PUSH HUMANITY TO NEW LIMITS.

Ps: You're a fucking idiot.
