Gas Powered Games: PC Gaming Is Not Dead
Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor says the PC space is "where the opportunity is."
Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor seems rather excited about the state of PC gaming. He even believes that the PC version of Dungeon Siege III will actually compete against the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions in regards to actual sales. Why? Because of Steam.
"Two, three years ago I would say the 360, PS3 version [would dominate], because PC was in disarray," he said in an interview. "Now with Steam--a year-and-a-half ago they announced 25 million paying customers as opposed to people who just created accounts. There will probably be 40 million the next time they provide an announcement--or 50 million. That creates an incredible intensity in the PC business that had been lost."
He also said that the PC space is where the "opportunity is," meaning the platform is in a rapid state of change. He pointed to Google's acquisition of Zynga, EA purchasing Playfish, and the fact that 70-percent of Activision's revenue comes from the PC--just several examples that "major" players are investing in the PC gaming industry.
"It's a matter of time before you're playing a game of the quality of a triple-A game that we know and love, like a Supreme Commander 2 or a StarCraft II, in a browser experience," Taylor said. "There's no reason that won't happen within five to eight years. That's one of the reasons PC gaming breaks out in that space. No installation. No grief. No reading the box and wondering if you have a 7000 or 8000 series video card and DirectX what? It just plays. It works. Wait till that happens full on."
Dungeon Siege III is expected to launch in 2011.

Cloud computing and media streaming is a great idea and all very aludable, however until an extremely fast broadband connection is the norm, then i'm sorry but it just isn't gonna happen, Imagine if you will waking up on Xmas morning and your present is an Email with a download code?....yeah ...great...thanks.... I think the Tangable product isn't likely to be faded out in the near future.... Sorry.
Regards to all from Geordie
No way Jose, I want hard copy, and I do not care if it is in a paper bag with a black and white pix on it, I only play single player fps and never play on line, I am not interested in having some yankee snoopware loaded on my pc, thanks ,, but no thanks...
why would anyone think pc gaming is dead? i thought it was just becoming more alive the past couple of years.. with world of warcraft and all... plus sc2 just came out.. and then when diablo3 comes out everyone will just quit there jobs including me. steam and xfire have been out for yeeaaars.
Steam was a valve/indie only distributor until not long ago though. I think steam is doing well for the PC community...making purchasing games that much easier, and at generally decent rates. Without third party mark up from electronics stores, the games prices are very attractive. My steam account is currently worth $1758.52USD using that steam calculator thing.
"like a Supreme Commander 2 or Starcraft II" hah sorry Chris, you shouldn't really mention your shitty disappointing supcom2 in comparison with SCII

Was just going to say the same thing!
Comparing Starcraft 2 to SupCom 2 should not be allowed. SupCom 1 would be a better attempt, since that game rocked hard.
There was a comparison between the two games? Pretty sure it was just to convey the graphical potential that browser based games will be able to achieve. SCII is over rated anyway.

He called them both triple A games, which SupCom2 most definitely is not, being a step back in almost every regard from the first.
The issue with PC game sales is that Steam and other online sales are not included. Of course sales are lower if you only add up those through retail outlets - many of them have only a token stand of PC games, if any.
