Square Enix wins plagiarism case over singers music video
Seoul (South Korea) - A judge this week ruled that a music video from Korean singer "Ivy" maliciously infringed on Square Enix copyrights with regard to Final Fantasy VII : Advent Children.
The music video used elements of the movie’s "storyline, setting, characters and their style of dress," according to the ruling. Advent Children is a theatrical sequel to the Playstation video game Final Fantasy VII.
"This judgment by the Seoul Central District Court is stringent in comparison to other copyright infringement cases in South Korea, and we appreciate that the maliciousness of this infringement has been recognised in a public forum," Square Enix general counsel Yasuhiko Hasegawa was quoted as saying in a Hollywood Reporter article.
Square Enix is known almost notoriously for its protection over its content. At trade shows and press events, it rarely allows attendees to film any of the material on display.
The Korean case wasn’t a windfall for the epic video game giant, though. The producer of the music video, Fantom Entertainment, has been fined the equivalent of around $11,000, with individual directors involved fined a total of an additional $13,000.
