We May Know Valve's Big Super Secret

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

More talk about what Valve plans to reveal.

Recently we reported that Valve Software sent the press an unusual email announcing that the Portal 2 pre-E3 press event was canceled. Instead, Valve would reveal a big surprise that's left many fans and journalists speculating.

Some of us assumed that the company would finally reveal Half-Life 2: Episode 3, the long-awaited installment that feels a bit more like vaporware at this point. However that's not the case--the possibility was shot down by head honcho Gabe Newell.

A mysterious image soon appeared, supposedly from the actual E3 pamphlet. The image sported the Half-Life logo with "Freeman" and "June 14" centered underneath. Newell also nuked any possibilities of what the image would indicate, claiming that it was a fake. Again, we were left wondering just what Valve was up to.

Now rumors have surfaced that Valve will introduce Source Engine 2. An anonymous source said that it's possible Valve will actually show Half-Life 3 running on the new engine, backing up our belief that Valve may have turned Episode 3 into a full-fledged sequel.

Yet if Gordon Freeman isn't part of the June 14 equation, then Valve may simply announce just the engine alone. We tried to get to the bottom of the matter, however Valve has yet to return our emails.

It's reported that Valve's big surprise will not take place before Microsoft (June 14) or Sony (June 15) press conferences. It may be that Valve plans to reveal its surprise at one or both events next week.

its really the only other possibility other than a completely new series.

a lot of people were waiting for eps 3, but it was supposed to be a "big surprise" valve doesnt through out episodes as surprises. a new engine and half-life 3 can be a huge possibility, i love valve.

You and all the other sites that have guessed it might be Source2...

It's fine having it as an article, but making it sound like it's some big, exclusive idea is pretty cheap.

I Loved all the H-L 2's, and it's engine, Source, but after playing it nowadays, it seems a little out dated graphics specially the textures and edge handling -but still AWESOME, no doubt-, and about Valve maybe showing it's new engine, it is reasonable. I can't wait to see what will happen!
Go Valve, Don't disappoint us PLEASEEE!!!

If it's not HL2:EP 3 or HL3 on a brand new engine, then it doesn't count as a surprise. Hey Valve dudes, where's my cake?

I don't think I've ever followed a story so intently! When they made their first announcement I actually reinstalled all the half life's games and started again from the beginning. Hopefully by the time I finish they'll be real close to releasing EP3/HL3.

This would make sense, given that they are now trying to open up the gaming market to Macs.

Portal 2 + Source2 would make me very happy.

God. Fucking. Damnit.

Portal 2 will be great fun and all, but it's pretty much a filler game, we all want some Half-life already.

Well that depends, did it take you over a year to complete Half life the last time you played it?

I wouldn't put it past anyone, even Valve. Call me cynical, but I have very little if any trust left in the big developers. They will go where the money is every time, and at this point, that means consoles.

As for the PC, almost everyone just churns out bland, generic, soulless cookie-cutter titles to milk every drop out of what's left of the market.
