Sony Pops Out Pricey SACD Player

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Chicago (IL) - Last time we checked, the Super Audio CD (SACD) was one of Sony’s big failures in recent history. The idea of a DRM-laden specialty audio listening experience did not sit well with high-end consumers. It never really seemed to gain much threshold and one could assume it died off like other failed Sony formats. Not so, it seems - at least if we believe that Sony is serious about launching a new SACD/DVD player later this year.

The Sony SCD-XA5400ES, priced around a hefty $1500, will offer support for all of those SACD CDs that may have been gathering dust at home (is there actually anyone out there who has any ?). It has several highlighted features, including a DSD multi-level filter plus D/A converter technology, a twin R-core transformer and HDMI output.

Other technical aspects of this SACD player include a weight of around 10.2 kg, an included remote control, optical and coaxial digital output, a frequency response of 2Hz - 100kHz and a dynamic range of more than 110dB. If you find, for some reason, $1500 is too much to spend, you can also wander over to But the SACD is dead, really.
