Sega Master System comes to the Wii
Kyoto (Japan) - The latest vintage console to be revived on Nintendo’s digital download platform will be Sega’s first globally released system - the Master System.
The Sega Master System was released in 1989 and went on to live in relative obscurity. Several MS titles became more well-known when they became ported to the Game Gear, Sega’s first and only attempt at a handheld gaming platform.
Nintendo has confirmed the Master System will be heading to the US version of the Wii’s Virtual Console, which allows users to purchase and download classic titles from vintage game systems. The new console will first appear in Japan, though, with no word on a global time table. Japan is also slated to receive titles from the Game Gear as well as the Sega Mark III, a system that was never released outside of Japan.
The Virtual Console began with titles from Nintendo’s NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 platforms, as well as the Sega Genesis and the Turbografx 16. Since then, the Neo Geo and Turbografx-CD platforms have been added. Over 120 legacy video game titles are available in the Wii Shop channel.
