I've already heard from a number of cell phone developers who say I should stop complaining about the reliability of cell phone service because it's just not their fault. I agree. The phones are cool and feature packed, but the fact remains that, even with all the bells and whistles, they don't perform their allotted task without a signal, which seems to go out at the most inopportune times. A lot of the problem is that, while we all want better service, few of us want transmitters in our neighborhood, even though we're more than willing to put one up to our ear. Here in the U.S., Sprint is one of the major national providers of digital cell phone service and just announced a new addition to the phones it offers. For those of you outside the U.S., it also appears to be a new addition to Sanyo's cell phone line. The new Sanyo SCP-5150 features a backlit, 256-color LCD screen and can download ringers and graphics wirelessly. The dual-band phone is equipped with a new medium-size (1000mAh) Lithium Ion battery that can provide up to three hours of talk time or ten days of standby time in digital mode. Photo Caller ID lets you select up to 20 color images to appear onscreen during incoming calls. The menu-driven phone also lets you adjust backlighting, contrast, menu colors, and font sizes. The silver-toned Sanyo SCP-5150 is available for $399.99. Phone dimensions are 3.7"H x 1.9"W x 1.1"D. Its weight (with included medium battery) is 4.1 oz. An optional high-capacity (1360mAh) Lithium Ion battery is said to provide four hours of digital talk time or 13.5 days of digital standby time. The little gadget includes an electronic organizer with a scheduler/calendar, to-do list, event manager, and function alarms; voice-activated dialing for up to 30 phone book numbers; call screening that lets you listen in while a caller leaves a message; and external caller ID that lets you see who's calling without opening the phone.
