Samsung's Transparent OLED Laptop Coming Soon

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Samsung's transparent AMOLED technology is hitting the market within the next 12 months.

Plastic Electronics reports that Samsung Electronics will release products using its clear active matrix OLED displays within the next 12 months. Samsung displayed prototypes using the clear AMOLEDs during CES 2010 back in January. However this is the first indication that the models on display will actually head to retail any time soon.

As we saw during the show, the laptop sporting Samsung's clear AMOLED allowed the user to see objects placed behind the screen while still offering sharp, bright images on the display. While the actual technology was quite impressive, the ability to see movement through the AMOLED screen looked to be somewhat distracting.

Plastic Electronics said that the first device to go commercial using the tech will be Samsung's IceTouch MP3 player (YP-H1). This device is a portable all-in-one that plays music, DVDs, tunes in FM radio stations, and more. The estimated price will be around $328 USD when it finally hits the market.

Reid Sullivan, VP of audio/video and digital imaging marketing at Samsung Electronics America, said that the AMOLED display should raise the bar for the next generation of portable devices. While that's all fine and dandy, where's that cool 14-inch laptop we saw at CES 2010? Apparently that should be on the market within the next twelve months too.

"We have a lab in Korea that is currently working on developing a laptop with partially-transparent screen," Sullivan said. "Soon, I imagine that all Samsung's audio-visual products will feature this technology. We want to be the first in this market."

I think this is awesome technology but I fail to see a practical use for it.

For practical uses I think something like automobile windscreen HUDs and perhaps similar in air craft.
I certainly don't want something like this for my gaming or productivity.

I agree the technology looks good, but I'm not convinced by its practical uses. I wouldn't want to use it in a general purpose PC or laptop.

For laptop? No thanks...
For my car? Hell f***ing yes please. Although it'll probably be ruled out for causing crashes by distraction.

Rather than blame something for a problem... why not work at fixing the problems...

At the moment the policy is to ban talking on mobiles in cars, reduce speed limits
(speed is one of the Lowest contributory factors to accidents 6.5% at The Most according to 3 UK Government studies 2 independent and one in house trying to get the figure higher LOL – is just easy to fine people for it.)

This dumbs people down, especially things like lower speed limits – get bored more easily, no longer have to keep eyes open for police while driving a little fast (read safely)

Take the smart route and enable technology to help our lives by getting the basics right!

Simple really, Teach all people useful skills to advance society like:

Multi tasking

Speed reading

How to be alert and courteous to those around you

(such as driving – they tell people on Big road signs here not to change lanes FFS. The more things are dumbed down, the worse they will get.)

I even recently heard that they stopped making it compulsorily to teach children to cross roads in schools (hope is not true)

You know, basic life skills some people seem to be missing these days.

Just that I think is all we need for a brighter future :)

Looks great, but the visual quality of the actual image your looking at has to be absoloutly shit. Like some have said, this looks awesome for windscreens and maybe even your bathroom window (geddit ;)), but for a laptop or computer you might actually want to use for something other than display the weather forecast.. nah.

Good for bling (I can see Apple using it real soon), but not that practical as a laptop technology surely. Would look great as a TV though - a mirror on your wall when turned off for example. Great way of hiding those huge ugly black screens that clutter up everyones living rooms!

@kyzar you can already get TV / mirror for the bathroom. Just search for "Bathroom TV Mirror".

It's nice sci-fi tech, with its uses, but def not for laptops (can anyone think of a benifit).
