Galaxy S2 Launching May 1 with 1.2GHz CPU

by - source: Crave UK

Samsung’s much anticipated Galaxy S2 will be launching in the UK early next month.

Originally scheduled for launch in March, Samsung this week confirmed that the Galaxy S2 will be launching on May 1 and will be on sale for as little as £500 (Play.com) -- CNet UK reports that this represents a £100 drop compared to pricing released last month.

While a smaller price tag is definitely something to write home about, the little tidbit we’re most interested in is the fact that Samsung has upped the processing power of this device from 1GHz to 1.2GHz. However, the exact CPU inside is unknown because last we heard, Sammy was planning to use Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset in some Galaxy S2 handsets.

When the phone was revealed at MWC, Samsung had said it would use the company’s own dual-core processor, the Exynos. It’s thought Samsung hasn’t been able to produce enough of the Exynos in time for the launch, so Tegra will pick up the slack until production reaches a satisfactory level.

Beefy CPU aside, the Galaxy S2 boasts Google’s Android OS (Gingbread/Android 2.3), along with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, and an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording video in 1080p. The phone also supports 1080p video playback.

It is a lot for a phone, but unfortunately, it's the going rate for an unlocked smartphone these days. Electronics in the UK are typically more expensive than the US and Europe, so comparing the two markets doesn't make sense. In this instance, we say 'as little' because last month it was rumoured to be launching with a £600 price tag.
