Sky Go Hits One Million Downloads

by - source: Sky

Sky's new Sky Go application has just hit one million downloads.

Sky announced back in June that it would be rebranding its Sky Player and Sky Mobile and merging them to form Sky Go. Free for existing customers (or between £15 and £40 for those without a Sky subscription) it launched on July 6 and is apparently doing rather well as far as downloads are concerned.

"The performance of Sky Go so far suggests that this convenience is really appreciated, and we’re thrilled to announce that the Sky Go app recently recorded its one millionth download," said Holly Knill, Head of Sky Player and Mobile TV. "On top of that, in August our customers watched over 40 million pieces of content on Sky Go, 85 percent of which was live channels and 15 percent on demand."

Sky Go enables users to watch TV on their phone, computer or tablet for free. How much access you have depends on the device you’re using, though. Customers watching on mobile and tablet devices are able to watch all five Sky Sports channels, ESPN and Sky News, with further channels to be added over time. Customers accessing Sky Go via their computer have access to more than 30 live channels, including all five Sky Sports channels, Sky Movies, Sky News, Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts, MTV, Disney, G.O.LD, Nickelodeon, NatGeo, History, Eden and ESPN, plus on-demand content.

Earlier this year, Sky promised support for The Cloud, its public WiFi network with 4,500 locations, at some point in the future. While Knill touched on the subject, she stopped short of revealing a time-frame for when we can expect such support.

"In the future, it will become even easier for Sky customers to enjoy Sky Go on the move, thanks to our recent acquisition of The Cloud, Europe’s leading network of public access Wi-Fi hotspots," she said. "Sky Go’s integration with The Cloud will allow customers to enjoy free access via thousands of wireless hotspots throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, so they can enjoy the highest-quality streaming of the content they love while out and about."
