School report cards straight to parents' inboxes

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

The jig is up, kids. Remember the days when you’d spend the week before end of term planning the big "Report Card Interception" ? Well, plan no more.

By 2010 all secondary schools in the UK will have switched over to electronic report cards. That’s right, before your parents even get home from work they’ll have your read your report card. [Perhaps it’ll give them time to cool off ? -Ed]

Education minister, Jim Knight, has said that electronic reporting would break down the barriers between home and school, while some teachers believe that too much information flying around would be risky with regards to data protection. Hmm, they do have a point, we are pretty crap at protecting our data. . .

Mr Knight said that parents and teachers would benefit from secure, password protected systems, which provided frequently-updated information on children’s achievement, progress, attendance, behaviour and special needs wherever and whenever they want.

Oh we can picture it now. Having an argument with your parents and they whip out the blackberry to check how many times you’ve not done your homework. Scary.

I think the less data we can give to the government at the moment, the better!

Ha - I actually supply a reporting system, which I built, to 2 schools and colleges. It does NOT need to be as comprehensive as the government suggests. The schools currently deliver a termly report (as you would get by paper back in the day) online via secure password protected areas. The errors will come if the systems aren't seperated. Mine seperates personal data from reports, so even if a hack got at it - all they could see are kids reports, no date of births, no addresses, no phone numbers, no photos etc. Those who don't have a computer at home, or don't want it online, recieve it by post still. 90% of parents take it my web, the staff all love it and the parents think it's great.

This is old news, I developed this 3 years ago - I just don't have a PR budget to get it out there - the government are behind the times.

uhhh unless they intend to make parents set up a new email account this seems like a bit of a dodgey idea to me.. i mean, i cant be the only kid who know's all his parents passwords can i?

and i know it sounds a little backwards but what about those parents without email accounts.. i know its very uncommon these days but there are some people who just dont.
