Good in Principle, but too slow with USB

Sharkoon Quickport SATA

For many users that own a number of Serial-ATA drives, Sharkoon’s Quickport is a simple and ingenious solution. It allows you to switch between drives quickly without having to constantly open your computer’s case. Notebook users will also appreciate the Quickport, as it lets them use 3.5” drives as well.

At €25, the Quickshare is a very good investment. Our only gripe is with Sharkoon’s choice of interface. Instead of the antiquated USB port, Sharkoon should have chosen the eSATA connector. This move would also have reduced manufacturing cost, as the Quickport could have done without the SATA-2-USB bridge. Besides, it would have allowed the SATA drives to operate at their full potential. USB 3.0 would have been another alternative to USB 2.0, but it’s still a little early for that interface to make an appearance. First, that standard has to become technologically mature and widely available. At least on paper, the specifications for USB 3.0 look very promising indeed.

Shame about it not not having both eSATA and USB.
I can under stand them going with USB as very motherboard/laptop have then, but if they had the eSATA as well then, they would have been onto a winner.
Personally the design reminds me of the old NES and Sega Master System game slots.

You can see the option of an eSATA connector on the picture of the PCB , just down from the USB connector.

They might release that version later , or you could just modify the case and add your own.

Never going to happen, but I immediately imagined software publishers putting their games on HDD you then slot into your dock. Sod blu-ray :D

Hmmm now all we need if for HDs to come in a protective plastic case for handling and it will look like we are back with 8-track cartridges.
I like the look of this device and will keep an eye out for an 'improved' version in the next few months.
