Portal bags Game of the Year at GDC Awards

San Francisco (CA) - Valve’s futuristic game Portal beat out other mega hits like Super Mario Galaxy, Rock Band and Bioshock to take the highest honors at this week’s Game Developer’s Choice Awards.

Held at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, the GDC Awards recognize excellence in the technical aspects of games, such as audio and visuals.

Portal, which was first released on the PC and then subsequently on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 as part of Valve’s "Orange Box" package, also won awards for best game design and innovation.

Other awards included best debut game, taken by Crackdown, best downloadable game awarded to the PS3’s Flow, best technology for Crysis, and best handheld game went to Zelda : Phantom Hourglass.

Bioshock, the second biggest winner of the night, won the awards for best audio, best visual arts, and best writing.
