QOTD: PlayStation Move or Kinect for Xbox 360?

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

It's been a busy week for gaming. Both Microsoft and Sony detailed their motion sensing solutions and with Kinect for Xbox 360 launching in November and PlayStation Move hitting this coming September, we're expecting a huge face off when the holidays hit.

Though they're aimed at the same demographic, Kinect and Move are quite different. While Move, similar to Nintendo's Wii, requires one or two controllers, Kinect tracks the player's body rather than a piece of hardware. This makes for quite a different experience because you don't have anything to physically hold but allows for a wider variety of movements that involve your entire body instead of just your arms and hands. That said, a lot of people don't like the idea of not having a controller in their hand and are even less enthusiastic about the idea of jumping up and down like a lunatic in their living room.

Microsoft's Kinect is priced at a simple $149 or $299 for an Xbox Arcade and Kinect. Sony's pricing is a little more complicated in that they've got a few different bundles and Move actually requires two pieces of equipment with an optional third piece for the full experience. There's a PlayStation Move Sports Champions bundle with the PlayStation Eye, a Move want and PlayStation Move Sports Champions, which costs $99.99 and the optional navigation controller (sort of like the nunchuck for the Wii) rings in at $29.99. A Move wand by itself is $49.99 and if you don't have a PS3 yet, you can pick up a bundle containing everything for $399.99.

Today's question of the day is: If you had to choose, Playstation Move or Kinect for Xbox 360?

Kinect

Mostly because Sony and the ps3 are behind the curve and epic fail.

Kinect of course. Finally my mother will play Forza ( she tried using the controller but with no success)

I think I would go with Move. Not because I'm a Playstation fanboy (I am, but this has sod all to do with this) but because I think Kinect has really gimped itself with lacking a direct input. I can see Forza being nothing short of Infuriating. For me at the moment, the whole motion control thing is little more than a glorified Light gun, is that bad? God no! Light guns are fantastic fun, but crucially they had a few buttons, and a pedal. There are a few things in games that need definite controls and im afraid I think that Kinect will only help to prove this. Perhaps game designers will find a way to make it work really well, I do hope so, combine this kind of thing with 3D and whatever and your really on to something. But while the jury is still out on wether you need buttons or not, im sticking with the tried and tesed, cause lets face it, the Wii kicks ass.

i can't really judge as i've not had a chance to test them or see how well they allow you to interact with your games, so i'll just wait and see, i'm just hoping they're both pretty good and worth the hype

From what little has come out from game designers about kinect the games featuring it will likely have it as an auxilary input combined with the controller, rather than gimic games like what happened with Playstation's eyetoy

Move is something like half way to what Kinect is. It looks like an improvement over the Nintendo Wii and probably more precise and suitable or easier to adapt to core games.

Kinect is a much more revolutionary technology but also more difficult to adapt to core games.

As far as I have seen in E3, none of the products shown appeal to me but if I had to choose one I would go with Kinect for the innovation.

neither - Logitech DFP wheel for driving games (latest GT5 trailer - yummy!) and normal controller for everything else. 3D, motion controllers are just too expensive for the extra functionality.

They both look underdeveloped to me.
I love the quote by the guy who said MOVE but he was not a fanboi (but that he really was).

Both look interesting but I can see Kinect actually bringing us something we want unlike the Sony ploy, buy what we say is the best.
Very Apple like.

Sony have spent a lot of time losing consumer focus and this is why I think i'll be going to Kinect, I can see where I'd use it without gaming and I don't want to suffer the vast array of crap that will come on on the Move like it has one the PS3.
I love my PS3 but for its potential, not its state. Some games are just stunning but knowing what I know now and given the choice of only 1 it would be the 360.
Better games, better selection, a lot cheaper and soon enough ill be able to order it around.

I will be getting both though, initially, Kinect is going to keep my attention, move will make me think of a fancy wii.

Kinect for sure.

I own a 360, but I have absolutely nothing against Sony or the PS3 - after all the PS3 is probably still a better piece of hardware and has had minimal faults compared to the 360.

Nonetheless, the Kinect and voice control seems like a much better approach. The Move is like a more precise Wii controller, plus you still have to buy multiple move controllers for multiple players.

This will make the Kinect a cheaper option in the long run too. Controlling menus and options with voice is also cool.
