Concept Shows Display-less, Keyboardless Dell

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

The Froot uses projectors and sensors to eliminate the need for a display or a keyboard.

Mock ups of great products that might never come to pass are my favorite part of this job. Sure, it's a little disappointing to know that I may never have a toaster like the one pictured but these concepts never fail to get me thinking about what the future might hold.

Paulina Carlos' Froot concept (via Engadget) is no different. Supposedly designed for a Dell sustainable design contest, the case is made out of a biodegradable starch-based polymer and the computer utilizes projection and sensors for both monitor and keyboard.

Pictured here in three garish colors because environmentally friendly doesn't have to mean boring, folks.

Nothing new, keyboard lasers are already invented long time ago. So do projector,

How is a projector environmentally friendly?!

Saves you having to produce a screen or separate projector - a very big environmental saving.

I think it is pretty cool actually - except my design would track user(s) eyes and project the fully 3D images directly into the eyes themselves. So don't have to have a mega powerful projector that looks washed out in brightly lit areas + don't need a flat screen to project onto...

The possibilities are So much better once this tch comes.

everything you interact with in Full 3D is seen clearly by the user. KB etc and work area and way you could interact with it are then only limited by the imagination!!!

As to the Games - well, that is another whole new world to explore ~_^

loving the concept, i think what people are missing is the bigger picture, looking at a pc as a whole, including the extra resources needed for a monitor and keyboard, from the plastic, copper and other metals used in the actual monitor to the packaging needed to deliver the items not to mention the reduced weight and size cutting down the impact of shipping the goods. Creating a true all in one pc has great potential and the use of novel material in the casing may seem like a green trick but reduce the reliance on plastic and so oil, while allowing the designers to still produce elegant designs.

But can it run Crysis?

I see.......

So you take the parts of a PC that almost never get upgraded (i.e. keyboard and mouse and) make them more expensive and intensive to produce, and then to add insult to injury build them into the actual PC so you have to chuck the entire lot away when you upgrade.....

And *THATS'S* sustainable??????????

@pailin I meant in terms of power usage

most PCs that are sold are supplied with monitor keyboard mouse dont get me wrong ppl who build/upgrade there systems often keep them, but big companies by a new unit. By refreshing your components you are using lower power systems due to the ever changing word of electronics, so say 17” tft draws around 65W a micro project (say dells own) draws 34W. This tech is new so resolutions not great but give micro projectors a few years and they will be up there. New legislation is being brought in to force companies to make sure there products can be taken apart and recycles, for example in a few years all cars being sold in the EU must be 95% recyclable. A system like this makes this process so much simpler. soon nothing will be chucked away, the most energy is used when going from a rew material to a product, to reuse this product take a fraction of this energy a good example is say aluminium, massive energy is needed to get it from the ore.

maybe im just looking at this from an engineering point of view

i was waiting for the tactile feedback issue :) i agree.

I'm sure this will be great fun to use in a bright room - doesnt matter that you cant see the screen because you cant see the keyboard either...

anybody notice the lack of mouse......
