PS3 Unit Sales Drop Sharply, Wii Remains Strong
Chicago (IL) - Market research firm NPD today released its July game console shipment estimates, which shed some light on how well each manufacturer travelled through the month with typically weak sales. All three manufacturers saw their unit numbers decline, with the Xbox 360 remaining the weakest of the three major consoles on the market today.
According to NPD, Nintendo’s Wii once again won the contest against the PS3 and Xbox 360 easily and outsold each one by a margin greater than 2:1. However, 555,000 Wiis translate into a sharp decrease from the 667,000 units the company sold in June. Sony sold 225,000 PS3, down from almost 406,000 in June, while the Xbox 360 dropped to 205,000 from 220,000 in June.

Nintendo’s Wii claimed a market share of 56%. If we include the 155,000 units of PS2s that were sold in July, the Wii held a share of 49%.
Total Wii sales now stand at 11.56 million ; Microsoft sold 10.67 million Xbox 360 units and Sony 5.08 million PS3 units in the U.S. so far.
PS3 sales were surprisingly weak during July, especially when we consider the strong showing in June. It was unclear how Microsoft’s decision to discount the 20 GB version of its Xbox 360 impacted July sales, but compared to its competition, the unit sales result of the Xbox 360 in July is impressive. At least in July, Microsoft did not give up too many units in terms of cumulative sales to Sony.

The best-selling game console in July overall was Nintendo’s DS handheld system with an estimated 608,000 units. Sony’s PSP sold 222,000 units.
The three best-selling games were NCAA Football 09 (Xbox 360) with 397,600 units, Wii Fit/Wii Balance Board (Wii) with 369,600 units and Guitar Hero : On Tour (DS) with 309,700 units.

I'm looking at the chart and I see the july 08 PS£ sales number to be higher than the 2007 months. You could say "Sales soar in June and are better than 2007".
Lots of people buy a Wii and never buy another game.
What tosh.
The 2007 months, i think that was when the model with backwards compatability was avaliable, and all the PS3's were really expensive.
October 2007 - December 2007 the wii sold shedloads, christmas rush obviously. With the 360 slightly behind.
People may buy a wii and never buy another game, but does nintendo care when the wii sells that much?
I honestly didn't think the 360 came that close to the Wii last Christmas. Then again, there was the small issue of availability for the Wii. Nice to see the PS3 doing respectably this year, I believe that this year marks the real test for whether or not the PS3 is going to be a real competitor in this generation's 2-way console war. Wii's off in a class of its' own.
