PS3 FW 3.30 Live, Preps Consoles for 3D Gaming

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

It's the update we've all been waiting for . . . Kind of.

Back in February, there were rumors that Sony would be releasing a 3D firmware update for the PS3 console. John Koller, the director of hardware marketing for SCEA said Sony would release the update, "this summer" turning the PlayStation 3 into a "a fully-fledged, stereoscopic 3D-capable games platform."

Last night Sony's Eric Lempel announced that the company was releasing PS3 3.30 and detailed that the update preps consoles for 3D gaming. The update consists mainly of enhancements for trophies but it's Lempel's mention of 3D gaming that has everyone talking.

"This update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony’s 3D BRAVIA TVs," Mr. Lempel wrote.

Sony's 3D BRAVIA TVs are expected to hit this summer so it doesn't really tell us anymore about a release date but it's nice to know things are moving in that direction.

3D gaming will be amazing, but i wonder that nobody seems to be interested in creating more out of stereoscopic viewing like coop games in full visual sitting side by side using differently controled shutter glases, or viewing of different programs or one is playing games while the other person is watching its news on the same tv. Any ambitions about that in the future?
