Nintendo asks U.S. government for help combatting piracy

Redmond (WA) - Nintendo has contacted the US Trade Representative, asking it to help fight video game piracy around the world.

Nintendo filed a "Special 301" complaint, a concern that can be brought to the Trade Representative’s attention from American citizens and corporations.

In China, piracy of the Wii and Nintendo DS are legion. There is even a Wii console mock-up with several games blatantly infringing on Nintendo’s intellectual property. Korea, Brazil, and Mexico are also prime targets, says Nintendo.

The gaming giant estimates it suffered nearly $1 billion in lost sales because of global piracy. In its filing, Nintendo asks for legal action to be taken against the offending countries. It claims over one million pirated Nintendo products were "seized" in China last year but no one was prosecuted.

"Nintendo will continue to work with governments around the world to aggressively curtail this illegal activity," said the company in a statement.
