Nintendo Sues Over R4 Cartridges

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Nintendo has reportedly filed a lawsuit in a Tokyo District court against 5 separate Japanese games companies, which they hope will prevent the sale of R4 cartridges and other similar accessories that allow users to pirate Nintendo DS software.

The R4 allows for the (admittedly legally dubious) practice of dumping bundles of games to a single cartridge, but it also enables homebrew gaming on the DS, which the Japanese company claims is costing them a considerable amount in revenue.

Nintendo isn’t the only company that wants to see R4 cards off the shelves. The DS manufacturer may be leading the lawsuit but there’s 54 other DS Developers that have jumped on the back of Nintendo’s bandwagon, some of the more notable being Capcom, Sega, Bandai Namco Games, Square Enix, Taito, Hudson and The Pokémon Company.

R4 cartridges are something that have been around for quite a while and Nintendo allegedly claims that up to 90-percent of people could be using these kinds of accessories to play pirated games on their DS.

Details of the lawsuit are not yet available and so, it is unclear how much Nintendo is asking for but we’re willing to bet the company will be asking for a lot, especially if they can prove that figure of 90-percent.

Don't you think this is just so rich. God it's like they cant make enough money off people that don't have a clue what they are paying for in the first place. Whats the price of a legitimate cartridge? What about £30. I have noticed on HMV that they are driving the price down. Does this tell us that the R4 and its like are causing such a drop in price or is it an indication that realistically you cant charge someone £30 for about 128mb worth of game data when you consider that its only about £20 short of what an Xbox 360 game. At least on the Xbox you get a full game (4 gig or so) and gameing experience. I like the idea of being able to backup my precious £30 cartridge. I like the idea of being able to store all my games on one cartridge. Nintendo probably do as well and when they are done with the sueing prosess they will probably produce an R4'alike themselves and charge you £40 for it lol. I say we should all be allowed to backup whatever games we like and store our precious original in a safe place. I dont hear Microsoft or Nintendo or any games manufacurer for that matter jumping in and saying they we will replace your faulty game for the cost of postage and packaging should your original game get damaged.

What should be sorted here is that all games should be downloadable. Death to CD and cartridges!
