Motorola Handset Shipments In Free Fall
Cellphone sales are still enjoying their phenomenal global shipment growth they have been experiencing since the early 2000s. According to iSuppli, 296.0 million units were shipped in the first quarter of this year, 20.7% more than in Q1 2007. Nokia and Samsung are leading the industry with shipments of 115.5 million and 46.3 million units, respectively.
Motorola is still listed as the third largest supplier, but while the company was sitting in solid second rank just two years ago, the company is now close to be dropping into a fourth and even fifth place. Q1 shipments came in at 27.4 million units, down almost 40% from Q1 2007. LG, currently fourth in the ranking, gained 54% to 24.4 million, followed by Sony Ericsson with 22.3 million units
