Microsoft has taken a first step in its strategy to make mass emailing less economical for spammers. Caller ID for e-mail would verify that each e-mail message originates from the Internet domain it claims to come from. Eliminating domain spoofing will help legitimate senders protect their domain names and reputations, and help recipients more effectively identify and filter junk e-mail. If successful, such a Caller ID would not only be a tool to track down the sender of the email, but also charge a spammer an ’electronic fee’, which Microsoft has not yet defined.
