Microsoft this week revealed that it has already started work on Internet Explorer 9.

Yesterday at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference, the company announced that three weeks ago (which works out at about a week after Windows 7 hit shelves), the Internet Explorer team started work on Internet Explorer 9.

ReadWriteWeb reports that president of Microsoft's Windows and Windows Live division, Steven Sinofsky yesterday previewed IE9, showing attendees an early build and explaining that this version of the browser will focus on support for new standards like HTML5 and CSS3, as well as developing a faster JavaScript rendering engine.

Sofinsky went on to say that the team plan to make use of DirectX-based hardware accelerated graphics and text in IE9. Sinofsky showed that IE8 can render Bing maps at 14 frames per second. With hardware acceleration in IE9 turned on, he got 60 frames per second.

Are you looking forward to ditching IE8 and moving on to IE9? Let us know in the comments below!

Why would anyone want to use IE8 with its cluttered layout (why is the home button on the right in the corner?! its a crime against intuition), and constant reminders and pop ups telling you to configure this and that, i just want to surf the web not trawl through pop up windows, then it set everything to 'Microsoft' related products, like Bing as default search engine. Plus it takes like 10 minutes to install when you do a windows update from IE7 -> IE8

The only use for IE8 is so you can download firefox when you carry out a new windows install, then i just remove the icon from my desktop.

I still use IE6. The reason? Smple, because it's simple to use and intuitive. Each successive version of IE puts more and more buttons and other gadgets on your screen and making the browsing experience more and more top-heavy.

Microsoft have a prediliction for cluttering interfaces with more and more widgets. Some "experts" at MS obviously think that this makes their products "look cool" and hi-tech, but good interfaces are ones that avoid clutter and are intuitive. I've often spent time just trying to find where key features are in newer IE browsers because there's too many layers. So, I end up coming back to IE6, which i know is long in the tooth, but it works for me.

I hate IE. Have done since it's early days - Google Chrome FTW!
I wonder how MS will corrupt the HTML5 and CSS3 standards causing all us web developers to produce yet more IE Quirks? They'll probably destroy JavaScript too if they try to make it "faster". DX Accelerated stuff is also bound to be highly gimicky - if you want decent animations - don't you just use Flash?

I'm sorry that I updated to IE8. I have had nothing but grief since I did. Now I find that I can't go back to 7 since I have XP sp3. Since MS wants to take control of my computer I believe I should be charging them to do so.
