U.S. memory giant Micron Technology, Inc., said that the "sweet spot" of the market had shifted to double-data-rate SDRAM, and that certain products are now selling below cost as inventories and other factors are taken into account.
In reporting its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, Micron said that DRAM prices had plunged 30 percent during its fourth quarter ended Aug. 29. Micron was able to partially offset the price drops by shrinking the processes used in its manufacturing lines, allowing it to increase production by 40 percent, a tactic known in the industry as "making it up on volume". Production costs per megabit declined by 10 percent compared to the previous quarter, Micron said.
