The days of needing cafeteria-sized rooms to hold corporate servers are slowly fading as technology advances allow us to fit more data in increasingly (decreasingly?) smaller spaces. That's a good thing, as the cost of square footage and electricity is also generally also reduced. If they could only reclaim the space to make cubicles bigger, it would seem like a much more substantial benefit. Maxtor is working on letting you shrink the size of your data warehouse with its new 640 GB MaxAttach NAS 4300, which is also available in a 480 GB configuration. The company says the 1U-high systems are designed for small to medium size businesses and enterprise workgroup/department environments. The new MaxAttach models are enhancements to the original NAS 4300 that began shipping in July of last year and feature up to 60 percent more storage capacity than the previous generation's 400 GB. The servers also include evaluation copies of MaxAttach EMS and MaxAttach SVS email archiving and storage virtualization software pre-loaded. Other features of the MaxAttach NAS 4300 include a Pentium III 866MHz processor; 384 MB SDRAM; RAID levels 0, 1, and 5; network interfaces that include dual 10/100 Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, and a SCSI port for local tape backup; support for Windows, UNIX/Linux, Macintosh, and NetWare clients; and 24 x 7 telephone technical support. Maxtor's MaxAttach NAS 4300 480 GB and 640 GB models are priced at $4,499 and $5,499.
