Zona, Inc. tells us that it has developed a scalable, fault-tolerant server engine called Terazona for online 3D games that the company says is capable of supporting a minimum of 32,000 concurrent users per server. Zona says that existing server loads are unable to support more than 6,000 concurrent players. The company sites a number of benefits for online video game publishers and developers. First, when using the system, online gamers won't experience any downgrade to their game play within a growing base of concurrent users as clusters of fault-tolerant servers will be created as needed within the messaging infrastructure (remember that this is what the company says). Second, Terazona is adaptable to support set-top boxes, Windows, Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, and Microsoft Xbox. Zona intends to form business alliances with data center companies who want to host the servers and will sponsor training programs on server maintenance for licensees. The company will also be running training programs using newsletters, a developer support web site, and developer conferences to educate folks about the Terazona platform, along with handing out free toolkits. If you're a developer and want to join Zona's early access program, you can email the company at gamedevelopers@zona.net.
