There was no cake, balloons or presents on Mars yesterday, but the humans who control the Spirit rover from Earth spent the day celebrating the robot’s first birthday - an unexpected milestone. Spirit and its twin, Opportunity, which later landed on the Red Planet, on January 24, were designed to work for at least three months.
