A Canadian man who recently received a phone bill for $81,000 has refused to pay because he insists he didn’t know he was clocking up such a high bill.

Basically, Piotr Staniaszek got a brand new phone and figured that even if he used the phone as a modem for his computer, he’d still be covered by the $10 per month unlimited online browsing he had with his old handset.

Stop rolling your eyes, some people really are that naïve. Anyway, there he was downloading HD movies like there was no tomorrow, or no bill, whichever way you want to put it. November rolls around and poor Piotr gets a bill for $65,000. Like most of us would, he assumed it was a mix-up.

At this point, we would have called our phone company and said something along the lines of, “Hey, $65K, really ??” but Mr Staniaszek simply ignored the bill and kept on truckin’.

Fast forward and he’s shocked when a bill for $81k comes in the door Like we said before he refuses to pay it because he didn’t realise he was being charged for downloading. Staniaszek said that he usually pays $150 for his phone per month and claims that when he goes over $150 the company call him and let him know.

Bell Mobility has already offered to reduce the bill to $3,243 out of the goodness of its own heart but apparently it’s not enough that they knock 78k off the bill.

Piotr has said “I’m going to try and fight it, because I didn’t know about the extra charges”
