MacBook Mini Concept: April Fool?

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

It seems like Macs are subject to the most mocked-up photos when it comes to visualizing the rumors. Mac fans don’t do anything half way and these pictures of the more than likely fake MacBook Mini are a perfect example.

This machine is definitely pretty, but is it real? "No way," would be my take on it but 9to5 Mac points to an advertisement in a Russian magazine which details (based on commenter translation) some pretty wobbly specs, but specs none the less.

Despite the fact that Apple has been saying there will be neither a MacBook Nano or iPhone Nano, people seem to be dead set on a netbook or ultraportable from Apple. If we were pushed for an answer we’d say Apple would rather go the ultraportable route than the netbook route. Ultra portables don’t come with the same bargain bin pricing and I doubt Apple will bring in more consumer-friendly pricing anytime soon.

Still, pretty things are fun to look at.

Apple already has an ultra portable and I sincerely doubt they'll confuse the issue or undermine their own MacBook Air by doing something else.

But, as I've posted elsewhere, something akin to a 10" iPod Touch or Samsung Q1 Ultra would be seriously sweet...

...and just as overpriced.

@wifiwolf:

Even though it is a fake, from that angle it could easily be that thin - the real Macbook Air is.

the place where you get the mainboard, mem, hdd , are thinner than the keys on the keybord :p. Not refering to the lcd, that's available already.

@wifiwolf:

Oh I know exactly where you're talking about - so I am. That angle would easily conceal the curved underside which holds all the components.

Look at the MacBook Air from the front - you'll see how thin the edges are and how shallow the angle is on the underside bulge. You could easily tip the Air onto its side by about 20 degrees (rough guess from the fake picture above) and totally conceal the bulge, making it appear razor thin.

In fact, Apple themselves do it: http://www.apple.com/macbookair/features.html

Of course, the picture's fake so this entire conversation is kinda pointless, but it is conceivable that Apple could shrink the Air even more (reduced footprint: reducing the keyboard and screen size and having the keys almost flush to the unit's edges) and go with a similar two-model Air line like they do with the MacBook Pro.

That way you'd keep the same ultra portability concept going with the Air but offer it in an even smaller size - that would get around the issues of confusing the issue and the Air's purpose I've mentioned previously.
