London 2012: It's Going to Be Hard to DDoS Us
Have they not heard of tempting fate?
Chief Information Officer for the London 2012 Olympics has said that cyber criminals will have a hard time launching a DDoS attack against the organisation's website. Speaking at the official launch of the London 2012 Technology Operations Centre (TOC), Gerry Pennell says the type of network the organisation is using will make it 'very hard' for cyber criminals to launch a distributed denial of service attack.
"The advantage is we are mostly about pushing data out. We can use a content distribution network, so it is very hard to launch a DDoS on us, because our front end is so dispersed," he said, according to MacWorld. He also said that they'll be keeping mission critical systems, such as athlete management, separate from web-facing systems.
MacWorld reports that London 2012 has brought on roughly 450 people to make up the London 2012 Technology Team. During the Games, 180 people will be working around the clock to provide 24/7 service and ensure everything runs smoothly. Let's hope these guys know what they're doing. A cyber attack on London 2012 has the potential to be disastrous and the fact that CIO Pennel is so outwardly confident that web miscreants will have a hard time launching a DDoS is worrisome. Let's hope those that carry out such activities don't take his comments as an invitation to try.
