The Side Winder is a gaming mouse
Overall it is hard to find a definite winner in the command area. The best we can do is point out the obvious orientation of the Side Winder to gaming requirements. This comes at the expense of comfort for office work. We do appreciate its on-demand setting of the macros. We should also point out the excellent scroll wheel of the G9, which makes it a far more versatile mouse. One of the last things we want to examine is of course the performances of these mice. As far as mice go we have very high-expectations indeed. The first comment will come to the surprise of no one: The accuracy and the reactivity of these two mice is absolutely excellent. The movements are perfectly transcribed and it is impossible to trip up the mice and cause false movements, even in during intensive use. There is still the burning question of whether or not Logitech’s announced 3200 dpi of sensitivity is actually useful. We will answer this in quite a detailed manner, but the basic gist of our conclusions already is don’t hope to exploit all 3200 dpi directly. There’s simply too much twitchiness to use it perfectly. Without correction at 3200 dpi, a move of one centimetre allows you to cross a 19” screen with a classic setup. A 30” screen can be crossed in two small centimetres. Nevertheless, this sensitivity offers flawless precision to the G9’s sensor (coupled with a rate of data collecting which is adjustable to between 125 to 100Hz), and gives the G9 a small advantage in terms of raw performance. If it can be hyper sensitive at 3200 dpi, it can also be hyper accurate at lower sensitivities.
To this we have to add its small size and its slightly inferior weight compared to the Side Winder. The Side Winder is pretty above average in weight for its range but the G9 is much lighter and easier to handle. This is especially true when equipped with its rough case. It is very effective, even if we do lament, just for arguments’ sake, the fact that its cable is not as supple as we would like (We do have very high standards…). Its excellent gliding is much appreciated as is its notched scroll wheel. These are both very important features for gaming use. Its management of profiles on-demand and the managing of macros are really excellent. It has a quite natural feel in your hand which allows for prolonged use without tiring the user. This is a godsend to anyone planning some intensive game playing. All this goes to show how versatile the G9 truly is, and that it is effective all round in the office or whilst gaming.
