HMV Launches New Listening Post App to Sell Music

by - source: TechRadar

Try before you buy.

HMV has launched a new Listening Post application for iOS users in an effort to get more customers to sample and purchase music. The app uses your phone's camera to take a photo of the CD's cover and searches for the the CD in HMV's database. Once it recognises the CD, it enables you to listen to preview clips from the track listing before giving you the option of purchasing the CD online.

It sounds like a potentially nifty idea. We can see how this might be useful in the shop, a sort of mobile Listening Post that lets you sample exactly what you want, where you want, but that sort of renders the ability to buy the CD online redundant. If you're already in the shop, and have the CD in front of you, why not just buy it in store? In a perfect world, this would allow you to buy a digital copy of the album via a link to Amazon or iTunes, or HMV's own digital store, HMVdigital HMV, but we seem to be stuck with physical CDs for now.

Try it out for yourself here.

Eek, it looks like I've been out of the UK too long. All fixed. Thanks!! As an aside though, I am now twice as confused by the app's inability to let you purchase digital music...
