Two major Linux groups, the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and the Free Standards Group (FSG) have merged to form The Linux Foundation. The new group will spread adoption of Linux by standardizing the OS and providing legal services to developers. The foundation also includes major companies like HP, IBM and Intel.

According to the press release, the foundation wants Linux, "to remain open and attain the greatest ubiquity possible, important services must be provided, including legal protection, standardization, promotion and collaboration."

Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, won't have to worry about The Linux Foundation as officials will continue to sponsor his work.
