QOTD: Should Sony be Sued for Removing Linux?
Over the last few weeks, there's been a lot of discussion surrounding Sony's decision to remove Linux support from the PS3. Those inclined to sue over the removal of Other OS support say they purchased their PS3 because they could install Linux on it.
Nielsen recently conducted a survey of 700 potential PS3 owners aged 7-54. The research firm asked these people why they were considering buying a PS3 and the top three reasons they received in response were the Blu-ray player, the recent price drop and the games available.
The table below shows the complete list of reasons offered by those in the market for a PS3. Because this survey was conducted after Other OS support was removed, this is not on the list. However, if Other OS support was available, it's likely it wouldn't feature high on the list of features people are looking for. That said, for those who did purchase a PS3 with it in mind, it's likely that it was an incredibly important feature for them.

Yes, they have reduced the capabilities and as such, is no longer the same product as when sold.
yep... its the same as if someone bought it because you could play multiplayer in the same room and now you could only play online... its less then what it was when it was bought...
I think if they didn't advertise the PS3 for being designed or capable of running Linux then they shouldn't get sued. On the other hand I still hope they get kicked in the b@lls. It would be like Intel or AMD saying "well sorry guys we're not gonna let you overclock any more..."
God no. People saying they bought a PS3 for Linux are just trying to jump on a bandwagon in case the payouts do happen.
You can get a better (and more hassle free) linux machine for cheaper than a PS3.
It's like Dell saying "Sorry guys, you can no longer run Linux on your PC".
When I bought my PS3, it was on the understanding that it had certain (advertised)capabilities. If they had just removed the ability to play Blu ray movies, what would the outcry be like?
Sony deserve to get kicked off their arrogant high horse.
I have decided to stop worrying about it and get on with my life. I have linux on my laptop and the HDMI works beautifully with my TV so no loss of functionality there.
I guess it sucks for all those people who REALLY did buy it for Linux. I thought it was nice, But when I read about how limited its capabilities were I decided i could get more out of running a virtual machine on my desktop.
Sony didnt decide to charge you extra when they added features did they?
OFC, in the United Kingdom what Sony have done is a direct violation of our sale of goods laws so anyone who wants to return their PS3 is entitled to do so for a full refund, no suing required
Its exactly the same as if they had remote disabled the ability to play blu-rays, the item is no longer fit for the purpose it was sold
Big whoop.. nobody cares.. PS3 is a multimedia gaming machine.. not for running open source software... If that's the reason u bought it... then may god help you..
