Acer: We'll Overtake HP in Laptops By End of Year

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Acer chairman JT Wang is extremely confident when it comes to his company's laptop department. So confident, in fact, that he expects to overtake HP by the end of the year.

"We have responded faster than our competitors to the demand in the market," the Wall Street Journal cites Wang as saying. "We are one of a very few that is able to respond to the market when demand stabilized in the latter part of the second quarter because we were prepared."

The WSJ report quotes Acer boss JT Wang as saying that, despite negative impact from the economic woes in Europe and wage increases in China, he expects the company to surpass HP to become the number one laptop vendor before the year is out.

JT Wang made his prediction to shareholders following news that in the first quarter of this year, Acer sold 9.49 million laptops worldwide, just a little more than the 9.47 million units sold by HP. Wang went on to say demand would ramp up in September, for the back-to-school season, and then again when the holidays hit.

It's a pity they make very poor quality notebooks compared to HP they are nothing, Hinges break, slow performance Acer = Taiwanese for slow. I unfortunately had two Acer notebooks which suffice to say haven't lasted the companies QC process is entirely insufficient why did they sell more than HP? they are cheap in fact much cheaper than HP but people still bought HP because it's a brand that is reliable for the most part

Hp isn't reliable, i've had 3 notebooks from them in 6 years and they all broke down before the second year was over, and they just waited till my guaranty ran out before sending a mail back wich told me in short that it would cost 450$ to make them repair a 450$ model.. :S

ps. acer has started making better products in the last years, a friend of mine runs his Aspire 6930 24h/day and it still works after 1 year..
