Revised file formats, the enemy of compatibility
With this working system in place the last barrier to the easy ability to working on any computer on a LAN is the issue of file compatibility. Popular programs that have been on the market for years and have their core functionality perfected need to motivate users to upgrade. Where once users upgraded simply because of added functionality developers now need to push their latest versions. They do this by making content produced in the latest version incompatible with order versions. This ensures users need to be using the latest version of the software on all computers. It is not enough to simply use the same version for all computers; it must be the latest, as frequently files come from outside sources. One of the most problematic pieces of software in this regard is Microsoft Word. For a text editor is has a surprising number of revisions to its file format, and while each one supports new features these features are becoming less and less pertinent to the activity of text editing.
Understanding some of the issues that can arise from sharing files on a network can ensure users are properly forewarned before leaping into a LAN unprepared. With non-Microsoft operating systems becoming increasingly popular it is becoming more important to understand the inner workings of common protocols, to make LAN file-sharing a hassle-free process.

I honestly believe my 14yr old son could write a better report than that and still have a point to make at the end of it.
Total waste of my bandwidth !!
Since when is Apache part of a LAN file sharing protocol? It doesn't have the features needed to share files and drives effectively on a local network. Macs use AFP (as well as SMB or NFS) for file sharing, and there's no mention of that.
How can you have an introduction to protocols and miss out the main one used by the second biggest OS vendor.
All major file formats have an option for saving compatible versions.
Toms, stop wasting time on this rubbish and do something useful, like updating the graphics charts to include the Nvidia 8800 Ultra, GT, GTS(G92), and ATI HD 2/3xxx series, some of which have been out for 7 months.
