Jobs Admits MobileMe Launch "Not Up to Apple Standards"
Steve Jobs has reportedly admitted that Apple was wrong to launch MobileMe at the same time as the 3G iPhone, iPhone 2.0 and the Apps Store.
According to a report in ArsTechnica, a leaked email Jobs sent to Apple employees on
Monday evening not only acknowledges all the MobileMe mishaps and bugs we’ve seen over the last few weeks, but also admits that delaying the MobileMe launch would not have been the end of the world.
Jobs said that with the launch of the iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 and the Apps Store, “We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.” He also suggested that perhaps instead of launching the service all at once they, should have rolled it out feature by feature, gradually building up to a finished product.
Jobs went on to say that while the MobileMe had been rocky, Apple was determined to make MobileMe “a service we are all proud of.”
“The Mobile Me launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services and learn we will. The vision of Mobile Me is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year."
The MobileMe launch has disappointed users and Mac fans the world over. Aside from being fraught with bugs, issues with users’ accounts and charges for trial accounts have had customers at the end of their tethers with the service. As of last week, major problems with MobileMe (such as users being locked out of their accounts and data not syncing) appear to have been correct and the current status message on the support page tells us that all MobileMe systems are working correctly.
