Intel delivered a solid second quarter thanks to record mobile processor and chipset sales. Revenue was up 9% year over year from $8.7 billion to $9.5 billion, while the company’s net income jumped by 25% from $1.3 to $1.6 billion. The result came in at the high end of the Intel’s guidance.

"Intel had another strong quarter with revenue at the high end of expectations and earnings up substantially year over year," said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. "As we enter the second half, demand remains strong for our microprocessor and chipset products in all segments and all parts of the globe."

Overall, Intel said that total microprocessor units were up sequentially and higher than seasonal. We don’t want to jump the gun here, but if Intel is any indication and our sources say that AMD had successful launches with mobile Puma platform and its triple-core Phenom processors are correct, then AMD should have had a good quarter as well.

Intel’s mobility group continues to outperform every other business unit inside the company. The mobility group was able to increase its profit sequentially from $1.17 billion to $1.25 billion, while the digital enterprise group saw a decline from $1.76 billion to $1.71 billion. "Other" business groups, which include the firm’s flash business, reported a loss of $706 million.
