Harrod's Selling Super Expensive Porsche Design BlackBerry
RIM might be having a tough time as of late, but the BlackBerry brand definitely has its die-hard fans. However, we're not sure we see even the most devout BlackBerry fan purchasing this particular RIM handset.
Designed by Porsche and currently on sale at Harrod's, London, this phone costs just shy of £1300. At £1275, the price tag translates to $1997 USD by today's exchange rate. That's a pricey phone. So, what is it that makes this handset so costly? Previously dubbed the BlackBerry Knight, the phone is now selling as the BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981. According to Phone Arena, it packs a 1.2GHz processor, 768 MB RAM, 5-megapixel camera, 720p camcorder, and 8 GB of on-board storage. The Porsche Design logo is emblazoned across the top of the device, just above the earpiece, and the exterior of the phone is stainless steel and leather.
While we're skeptical as to how well this phone will sell, units are apparently flying off the shelves. Harrod's spoke to Phone Arena and said the phone is available for order over the phone, is in very high demand and selling fast. If you're looking to get one Stateside, N4BB writes that Porsche Design stores in the U.S. have begun marketing the BlackBerry P’9981 and the device is apparently up for pre-order priced at $1,700. No word on a solid release date, but it's thought to be coming out next month. Just in time for Valentine's Day!
